Abstract

The author analyzes the psychological and pedagogical literature on the problem of maintaining mental health of primary schoolchildren and the conditions for its preservation. Children of primary school age are often found to act inadequately in difficult situations and to be unable to properly analyze the situations and draw conclusions which makes them feel discomfort and stressed. Individual mental health has three levels: psycho-physiological, psycho-individual and personal. The mental health of primary school children depends on many factors, among which are family environment, educational institution, the media, etc. The subjects of the educational process (teachers, school health workers, school psychologists) should take into account that primary school age is characterized by children's active development of natural talents, moral qualities, traits and social experience. Due to the fact that at this period children also develop fears which in future may transform into anxiety, adults must teach children to stay calm, balanced, hope for a better future, both independently and with the help from other people. It is noted that a special role in the preservation and strengthening of children's mental health is played by school psychologists who should give good advice to teachers and parents and provide counseling and consultations to resolve the problems that exist in our unstable society.
